plate rack: before & after

i love it when lela smith calls!  she’s one of the best interior designers in memphis, and she always has a fun project/challenge for me.  here’s a plate rack that she needed redone for one of her clients.  it arrived orange, and needed to work with wallpaper and fabric in shades of cream and green.  with its cute hand-cut scallops, it [...]

a little more english, please

local interior designer anne wilson has a wonderful selection of antiques and accessories at a little english, within market central (2215 central avenue) and la maison (4768 poplar avenue).  mrs. jones was thrilled to put a finish on these wall brackets for her (with a big thank you to lee anne roehm for her help in “staying in the lines”):

they’re chocolate [...]

in the mailbox

it’s such a treat when the mailman brings new magazines…this week, some yummy ones arrived:
house beautiful (12/2007) on page 24, “colors for coziness”: sherwin williams’s humble gold #6380 is the headliner here.  my talented and tasteful friend, interior designer robin selberg, has used that color beautifully for years!  (the fine editorial staff at hb just didn’t know.)   on [...]

red shoes, bathing

we had so much fun at the memphis college of art holiday bazaar last night!  my daughter meg and her darling friend madeleine were great company and very savvy shoppers.  meg purchased her first piece of art, red dancing shoes, painted by mca student teresa phipps.  i am thrilled to have brought home bathers no. 7, a [...]

urns – before & after

these urns, flanking a client’s front door, needed a makeover.
here they are, before…                                       …and after.

armoires, au revoir? not yet.

in an article titled “au revior, armoire”, this morning’s wall street journal reports on “why the furniture mainstay is being driven to extinction” (culprit: flat-panel tv sets) and includes a feature on re-purposing and painting an entertainment armoire to a wardrobe.  a-hem…  we’ve been doing that for a while now in memphis, tennessee!
this summer, i  repaired and [...]

every studio needs…

…a little doggie.  this is ours, miss ginger grant.

re: recycling

my friends know that i have serious landfill guilt about having used so many disposable diapers on the little joneses.  i strive to be ”green” in my painting practices, using acrylic and low- or non-VOC products whenever possible, and environmentally correct techniques always.
of course, being green can also involve re-using or re-purposing existing materials.  one of my favorite re-use projects was [...]

armoire – before & after

here’s a piece done recently for some super-lovely clients.  it was a little dark and heavy-looking for the beautiful room it’s in, so we lightened it up with paint and glaze.

here are some details:

say it isn’t so!

oh NO…today’s wall street journal reports that “conde-nast publications…will close venerable home-design magazine house & garden“, with the december issue being the last.
dominique browning and “testy tastemaker”, i will miss you so!

keep your shirt on!

here are some t-shirts i made for my daughter meg and her precious friends lizzie and anna.

sharpen up, mrs. jones

to celebrate the launch of our website, my sweet dad had these pencils made with mrs. jones’s URL on them.  my very tech-savvy parents are relieved, i’m sure,  that i have finally established a www address.  since my father had a long and brilliant career with IBM and other tech-sector firms, and my clued-in, media/PR [...]

welcome to the journal!

thank you very much for visiting!  this is where i will be posting news, notes, inspirations, and photos of some current projects, especially when there is a good “before & after” to show you.  it will include headlines and highlights: anything new, or different, or special.  (which is what i hope most of my work is!)  please check back often to see what’s going on [...]

here we go!

well, all i can say is…ta da!  the website is up and running.  i hope that you will enjoy being here, and visit often.
i want to send a huge thank you to ryan rowlett.  a talented artist and website designer, ryan has made all my web wishes come true.  contact him at r.y.a.n.speedwagon@gmail.com.  he will [...]
