you know that old saying about the cobbler’s children having no shoes? the same might be said for a painter’s own walls. so when my friend lauren dropped by yesterday, she noticed that i had (finally!) painted our own breakfast room, and proclaimed it “maria-from-the-sound-of-music-orange”. (it’s actually farrow & ball’s #70, orangery, with a little burnt sienna glaze streaked over it.) coincidentally, we took the little joneses last night to the orpheum theatre to see “the sound of music” on the big screen, and i understood then exactly what she meant…that particular orange does appear throughout the film: the exterior of captain von trapp’s home (below), silk curtains and upholstery in the house, the leaded glass windows in reverend mother’s office, brigitta’s “do-re-mi” dress…every scene has a bit of it. see if you don’t notice next time you watch the movie.
