setting the table

for 19 thanksgivings, i have been lucky enough to be mrs. jones and to escape hosting both sides of our families for the holiday.  apparently, it’s finally my turn.  to distract myself from larger worries such as turkeys vs. oven space and the total number of decent pillows in the linen closet, i’ve decided to make napkins from this [...]

be their guest!

my lovely client got a steal-of-a-deal on this armoire for her guest room: the perfect piece for company, with a place for a tv and big roomy drawers to unpack in.  upon arrival, though, it looked a little, well, less fabulous than the other appointments in the pretty, comfy room.  she requested a washed/aged finish to warm it up while still showing [...]

who, me? gosh, thanks!

the phone started ringing here very early this morning, which can only mean one thing….my brilliant and beautiful friend, the clever wordsmith sally walker davies, has mentioned mrs. jones again in her newspaper column, “great finds”, today.  sally is my go-to pal for oh-so-many things…plus she’s the destination diva!  read her travel blog and “great finds” (most [...]

digging elle decor

oh no…i’m having another of those elle decor = tiger beat  episodes…of all my beloved shelter magazines, why is it that this particular one sends me into squeals beside the mailbox?  in december’s issue, they feature an idol in my personal design pantheon, john derian, who lists among the “12 things he can’t live without” a hole is to dig,  the [...]

earl gray with two lumps, please

dear mary caroline,
it was lovely working on this table and chairs for your room, and i’m sure they will look pretty with your pale pink walls…vintage-y with just a touch of green, as you requested.  a very reliable source in the teddy-bear community tells me you are quite a distinguished hostess, and invitations to your parties are most coveted.  so, here’s a [...]

new red (white) & blue

is it the fresh wave of election-season patriotism i’m feeling?  or a little homesickness after a super-fun visit to chicago last month?   it’s just that suddenly, i’m seeing this combination of sky-blue and bright red everywhere.  i like it a lot.

(coat & barn in a recent anthropologie catalog…a ceramic spoon from pearl river…fabric from peter dunham, shown in house beautiful….chicago’s [...]

pumpkin shorts

mrs. jones narrowly avoided potential disgrace recently….imagine if trousers belonging to a gentleman other than mr. jones had been discovered in the station wagon?  quelle scandale!   but a lovely client wished for walls to match a particular pair of her husband’s bermudas, and so the always-helpful denise at seabrook obliged, tinting the paint to the [...]

a call to (a coat of) arms

a lovely client rescued this wooden panel at a tag sale, inspired to create a keepsake for her son using a family crest.  paging mrs. keras!  my exceedingly talented collaborator lauren and i painted and glazed the background to suggest wood grain, and then she took over.  using acrylics, metallic paint, glaze and gold leaf, she brought the fierce, mighty griffin and [...]

historic preservation

mrs. jones has had the honor recently of updating pieces originally done by local creative goddesses lesa rowe and susan driscoll.  it was more than a little daunting to touch anything done by their super-talented hands!
the top of this chest needed a re-touch after a cabinet topping it was removed for repurposing.  to complement the finish lesa had done, my lovely [...]

swede-ening up a chair

after my lovely client had her chair upholstered with this fab fabric, the finish on the frame went sort of red (though not in an angry or political way).  with some paint, a creamy wash, and a little tinted glaze, it looks just right.
here is before, after, and details:
