ox.ox.ox.

happy year of the earth ox!  the forecast for the year calls for stability and calm (especially welcome after last year’s turbulent rat), the opportunity to clean up messes and make repairs, and prosperity through diligent effort.  home improvements are in the picture as well.  i like this year already.

oh dear oh no oh domino!

can it really be true?  that domino is going the way of blueprint, house & garden, and cottage living?

but then, house beautiful…

in an apparent (and much appreciated) effort to cheer me up, the thoughtful editors at hb just delivered the ultimate color issue (are you neutral or are you bold?  how much color is right for you? all of the above, please!) with the monthly “i’m looking for” feature heralding the return of the aged look, and tossing around a vocabulary that is music to my ears: [...]

confessions of a moody blue drama queen

friends know that mrs. jones avoids moodiness, confrontation or drama of any kind, at any cost.  but when her brilliant friend, interior designer selena mcadams (of spruce) tossed out the idea of a sexy, dramatic, deep blue for her living room walls, it was clear that a bit of drama was just the kick that the little pink house needed.  first, though, the old plaster ceiling and [...]

come out come out wherever you are!

this shy little table was hiding under a bed in a lovely client’s home, possibly self-conscious that its veneer had sustained some unsightly water damage.  to keep the peeling under control, it had to be treated with an oil-based sealer before being painted, distressed, glazed, and sealed again to protect the new “old” finish.
now, as you know, mrs. [...]

bookcase 101

a lovely client found this little bookcase in her mother’s attic, and wanted to make it work for any one of her children’s rooms…cleaned up, prepped and brushed with a few layers of her trim color, benjamin moore’s muslin (#1037), it’s ready to go wherever her little bookworms might need.  here is before and after:

the good girl’s guide to rebellion…

…the best title ever, and a fab spread in the february domino, has so many juicy details in it that i just can’t think straight.  all manner of painted walls, floors, sisal rugs and trim, in brave, gorgeous colors, plus a gold dining room ceiling…it’s just too good!  one thing especially caught my eye: these chinese figures painted on to a [...]

ripped from the headlines

well, not really.  but it was fun to see in this month’s elle decor  “little league” feature on stylish children’s spaces an idea that the always-genius selena mcadams came up with for a lovely young client’s room a while ago.  here is one of a pair of chests from grandmother’s attic that we did over in benjamin moore’s berry [...]

lots more “before”

the perfect way to start the new year….lots of new projects!  is it our current economic situation or just a coincidence that there are a dozen pieces of furniture lined up to be done that lovely clients have rescued from beneath beds, attics or basements, and garage sales to refurbish and use?  whatever the reason, [...]

happy, lucky new year!
