bbf goes sleek & chic

teamed up once again with the fabulous gwen driscoll and her lovely client, more bbf (big brown furniture) from storage was given a fresh new look…before:

gwen specified black & lacquered with platinum-y hardware.  here’s after:

to get the pulls just right, they were primed, glammed up with coats of silver “liquid leaf“, and ralph lauren’s regent metallic in ambassador sterling (rm.14), then sealed with a [...]

spring fashion alert – stripes!

don’t be alarmed. mrs. jones does not fancy herself in the league of garance dore , scott schuman (the sartorialist), or the writers of her new favorite blog, mrs. o…she just wants to call your attention to the very nice april issue of traditional home, which features not one, not two, but three beautiful rooms with striped walls.  one is wallpaper, the [...]

handy new tools

the first day of spring! time to hit stewart brothers and get the toolbox kitted out with a few new things: a rubber mallet for those paint can lids, a fresh new tin of bowling alley wax, a cute blue nailset, and – so exciting - a bolt-cutter.  larry johnson (the best electrician in the southeastern region, bar none) taught me how [...]

she just can’t keep a secret

many thanks to the super-gracious ladies of the junior league of memphis sustainer garden club for having mrs. jones as the speaker at their luncheon today.  and yes, for a shrimp salad sandwich, fresh fruit, and mini-eclair, she compromised her principles and told it all…how-to’s for re-doing concrete containers, terra-cotta pots and garden furniture.  (actually, it was that raspberry [...]

exchange (club) rates

with dear friends courtney, margaret and rinnie committed to such an outstanding organization, i was happy to say “yes!”…and so this little table is going to be auctioned at the exchange club family center’s annual hands of hope benefit  on march 28.
a flea market find, it got a fresh coat of paint (benjamin moore’s healing aloe, #1562), a layer [...]

coincidental tea party

in mailbox today: this cute “one-lump-or-two” lamp in the anthropologie catalog, and a “make me over” feature in the april country living  with the how-to on (you guessed it!) creating your own from teapots & cups.  good thing the flea market is this weekend.

fabby/shabby vanity & dresser

these pieces, out of a lovely client’s storage, needed a strong, lively finish to hold their own with a knockout wallpaper chosen by talented memphis designer gwen driscoll.   after removing the old varnish, they were given the full-on fancy flea-market treatment: heavily distressed layers of wax, paint, glaze, and gold leaf.
here they are before:

and after:

new orleans!

spring break, and a de-lish visit to one of our favorite places.  foremost, great food: camellia grill, parkway bakery, lilette, acme oyster house, pie, deanie’s, gelato at angelo brocato’s, and of course, daily beignet runs to cafe du monde.  and while my family enjoyed a swamp tour and the audubon aquarium, mr. jones gave me a pass for a day on magazine street, to devour [...]

hermes in the house

you can imagine how difficult it is for mrs. jones to keep her mitts off the little joneses’ school projects.  we are strong believers in a meritocracy, though, and so as our children earn their own grades, i must sit on my hands (and occasionally bite my tongue).  our latin scholar, will, (appearing as hermes, messenger of [...]

2% shelves

these cute shelves (designed to hang on the wall, plate-rack style) were constructed for a lovely client’s nursery by a doting aunt and uncle.  she asked for a clean, white finish, and so milk paint seemed just the thing, especially since it’s completely non-toxic, and won’t off-gas anything icky into precious baby woodson’s micro-atmosphere.
milk paint (like lime [...]
