buffet #3

a lovely client’s request: lighten (and glam) up this piece from her mother’s home.
before and after:

and some details:

benjamin moore cameo white #915, with raw umber glaze and wax…liquid leaf and then gold leaf, aged, on the fillets and pulls.
(i’m hoping to have on-site photos soon, but it’s headed out of town to a beautiful breakfast room in jackson, [...]

lovely mrs. parish

please excuse mrs. jones from work today.  it’s time to present my paper to the memphis woman’s club (est. 1890) on sister parish, her life, and her current relevance to interior design.  preparing to take my turn at the podium has been the best excuse ever for a total mrs. parish immersion, re-reading sister and digging up all [...]

urns you keep

these urns surround a lovely client’s beautiful patio and pool.  the cast concrete planters just needed a little glaze to make them look more like stone.
before:

and after:

they will be so pretty potted up with the palms she has planned.

buffet #2

there is truly not a single day when i am not grateful for the glorious good health of the little joneses (no matter how they might try my patience).  we were especially lucky to be able to bring the twins, who went the gestational distance and weighed in at over 7 pounds each, right home from the hospital.  so when my hardworking and wonderful pal [...]

buffet #1

mrs. jones’s talented friend, designer robin selberg, helped a client find this buffet…perfect piece, perfect height, perfect price…but very (very) white…not quite right for their handsome paneled room.  here it is, before and after it was mellowed with a coat of benjamin moore’s powell buff (hc.35)(tweaked a tiny bit) and a little glaze:

cultivating friends

mrs. jones was honored to provide the program for today’s gathering of the cultivated friends garden club.  lovely and lively ladies, a beautiful home, excellent chicken salad…the perfect meeting!
(cfgc members, please note: there will be random checks throughout the season to see how beautiful your painted pots look.  consider yourselves warned.)

buffet buffet buffet

before before before…not one, not two, but three buffets.  hmmmm.  fluke, or trend?

please check back soon for “afters”.

word of the day…

…from dictionary.com today: frisson.
which is exactly what i felt when i saw this in my just-arrived may 2009 house beautiful:

prussian blue venetian plaster walls in a dining room designed by allison caccoma.  gorgeous.

bandbox-fresh mailbox

my dear friend and lovely client sally davies has her beautiful home on the market… and while the rest of the property has curb appeal to spare, she knew that the mailbox needed a little attention.
before & after:

we chose an espresso brown to match the trim on the house.  because of the texture of the mailbox, [...]

hippity, hoppity…

a favorite lovely client requested painted pots in spring-y colors to put lilies in and give as gifts…

…which can only mean one thing: it’s time to dye some eggs.

big-a#% stencil

a request from my wonderful friend and collaborator, lauren keras: could we stencil a wall with a damask motif, borrowed from her curtain fabric, to create painted headboards?  of course!

first, she painted the wall, getting the green just right.  then, with help from candaice and trevor at our neighborhood fedex/kinko’s, we enlarged the design on the amazing gigantic scanner [...]

he’s in the building

yes, he was…elvis himself.  today.  at starbucks.  ordering a peanut butter & banana latte/extra hot/heavy whip.  fresh from an early-morning appearance, he was clearly in a hurry, and mrs. jones gladly yielded her place in line.  after a sincere “thank you, baby”, he departed to take care of business, confiding that he has a day job too: “can’t [...]

april food day

”beauty has no inherent usefulness, and yet without it, we could not endure our lives”.
this quote (attributed to freud) is one of mrs. jones’s favorite ways to justify her work and love of design.  but when worried about feeding your family, or not having a warm, safe place to sleep tonight, who could seek or enjoy anything [...]
