idal recap

no, we don’t need ryan seacrest for this…it’s the idal convention…the very best in every facet of decorative painting gathered right here for a week in memphis!  it was an inspiring, exhausting, thrilling few days.  tuesday kicked off with a great textures class led by gary lord of hg-tv renown.  my favorite finishes are the ones he’s dubbed ”champagne” and “luster-rust”:

(very cool looks for the [...]

print rooms

helen morris’s idal workshop on print rooms was fascinating and so much fun…in a nutshell, print rooms began in the uk in the 1700’s as a sort of method of scrapbooking: cutouts of favorite prints and mementoes from travels were brought home and applied directly to the wall, with frames painted around them.  in class, we [...]

gwen again

i love it when gwen driscoll calls!  this time, instead of one of her many lovely design clients, she’s working on things for her own home.
these two chests needed a fresh, light, new/old look – and to work as a pair - for her beautifully re-done digs.  here they are before and after:

for those of you taking notes: benjamin moore’s bennington gray [...]

little black table

this pretty drinks table for gwen driscoll’s library had a nice old green finish, but wasn’t right for her new scheme.  black and glossy (but not lacquered), with just a trace of gold, was the request.
here is before and after:

black paint was rubbed down with paste wax.  gilding on the edges was heavier that what gwen was looking for, so [...]

summer school

the current issue of country living has an inspiring article detailing summer workshops on everything from letterpress and photography to batik-dyeing and ceramics.  (and you all know how mrs. jones has been craving a spot at one of natalie chanin’s studio weekends, also mentioned in the spread.)  but this year, summer school is coming to me…the annual idal [...]

just a little more wicked.

we just can’t help it…my meg and i love everything wicked.  so when the top-notch touring production arrived at the orpheum in memphis, we rolled out the green carpet to celebrate with friends pre-theatre.

marcie dodd was perfect as elphaba, the green girl who tries to make good.

powder room break

can you see the finish on the cabinets from there?

no?  well, sort of?  excellent.  because when the fabulous lela smith (of a little english interiors) asks for “just a little something” for a lovely client, that’s precisely what she means.  the always tastefully restrained mrs. s. requested just a little crackled texture on the doors (farrow & ball’s #2003, [...]

happy birthday, america

five joneses, eight hotdogs, three sno-cones, one winning redbirds baseball team, and too many oooh’s and aaah’s to count.

i think that’s a pretty-close-to-perfect fourth of july.

queen anne in the pool house

this chair is an old favorite of a lovely client’s, but it needed a california-girl update for its new spot in her pool house.  you’ll have to use your imagination until i can photograph the re-upholstered version, but trust me, it’s going to look great covered in straw-yellow linen.

for the sun-bleached, weathered look my client requested, it [...]
