hard to believe (or perhaps not?) that our little website is two years old! to celebrate, mrs. jones’s web designer extraordinaire ryan rowlett is working on some improvements and updates: new photos sprinkled all around, enhancements for the journal, and – oh my - a me & mrs. jones facebook page. so those kind readers who have emailed to get in touch will soon be able to leave comments (without those scary error messages), track back to a particular post, and fan up on facebook. all of this is in the works…please check back.

the occasion will quite possibly warrant additional cupcakes. (this one, baked by meg jones, is a cappucino cupcake with mocha-cream frosting. see the cupcake doctor for recipes. and if this makes you hungry, take a peek at my pal perre’s new fab foodie site, the runaway spoon…everything about it is de-lish!)

(very cool looks for the right spot.)

wednesday, though, was life-changing for mrs. jones. cynthia davis filled a day (and our portfolios) with incredible layered, stenciled finishes. her brilliant line of wallover stencils, designed with the lovely rena paris, are one knockout pattern after another. she is an excellent instructor: engaging, engergetic, and positive, giving non-stop practical advice and entertaining job-site tales from the front. but more than anything, cynthia is super design-generous, willingly sharing every single experience, paint color, product tip and technique she knows. she’s nothing short of amazing…truly, my idal idol.

(left: cynthia working the wallovers booth at the expo, which was, of course, the friendliest, most fun and inspiring space in the whole entire convention center. right: my fave samples from her class.)

the week wrapped up with a great cabinets & mouldings session with wonderful julie zouzounis and a very fun “print room” workshop taught by the stencil library’s vivacious resident goddess herself, helen morris. (more below on this.) helen was the keynote speaker for the convention. the topic of envious ladies-room chatter all week: her fabulous “speech skirt”.

(i love my new samples from julie’s class!)

”beauty has no inherent usefulness, and yet without it, we could not endure our lives”.

this quote (attributed to freud) is one of mrs. jones’s favorite ways to justify her work and love of design. but when worried about feeding your family, or not having a warm, safe place to sleep tonight, who could seek or enjoy anything beautiful? so,

if you’ve read anything else online today, you’ll know that there is an action afoot proclaiming april 1, 2009 ”april food day”, encouraging readers to make a donation to feeding america . this extremely worthwhile concept is the brainchild of chris cox (easy & elegant life) and meg fairfax fielding (pigtown*design). every dollar contributed to feeding america provides seven meals, or ten pounds of food! now, mrs. jones is no mathematician, but that seems like an incredibly efficient way for us to help. please consider a contribution to feeding america (or a local food bank or shelter of your choice) today. that would be truly beautiful. no fooling.
