viva stencil library

not to worry…mrs. jones is not breaking her promise to you…this is not becoming an elvis fan site!…just had to say thank you to helen morris for another kind mention  about our new app on her wonderful blog, and to share with you her chips’ very cool stencil of the king:

you do remember helen’s skirt, don’t you?

in perfect symphony

mrs. jones is thrilled to bits to have one of her pieces on its way to the richmond symphony orchestra league’s design house, opening september 13th.  lovely kent hughes (of fairfax designs) had a beautiful table custom-crafted for a particular designer’s assigned area.  working from her sketch and with the soft oyster-white and raspberry red she specified…(for now, the rest of [...]

etsy!

for those of you who can’t get to market central, mrs. jones’s ship-able pieces will now be available on etsy.   drop in and shop when you get a sec.   more inventory is on its way.

baby boom

as you know, mrs. jones loves babies.  so it is especially nice to begin the school year with new babies to prepare for, since the young joneses are all – heart-breakingly! - entering grades in middle and high school.
here is a functional piece for baby ruthie’s room…some primitive shelves rescued by her grandmother, sweetened up for books and toys.  [...]

party-shoe pots

a little something new, just for fun…pots treated to the same high-gloss finish that is a favorite on furniture these days.  a little drama for your orchid, perhaps?

at market central now, in black or espresso/bittersweet chocolate/obsidian brown…$12.

king me.

it’s finally here: launch day.  king me, the rock ‘n’ roll royalty tour travel app is now available in the itunes store.
back in april, my uber-talented & precious friend sally walker davies called in a request.  help her with a few photos and a little research for a travel guide?  absolutely!  as the days unfolded, the project became more detailed, fascinating, challenging and fun than we’d imagined…in the [...]

pure green chic

mrs. jones  has just spent another hot sunday afternoon lazing in her cool, darkened room, turning virtual pages…this time, the very impressive debut issue of pure green living magazine.  celine rogers is officially my new green goddess…click and enjoy!

her blog  is excellent, too!

summer camp, summer reading

while my lovely client’s daughter is away at camp, a transformation is taking place…the lucky girl will return home to a redecorated and rejuvenated room.   a few years ago, her handy dad built this bookshelf.  for the new scheme, it required just a little paint and glaze.  here it is before and after:

(the base color is pratt & [...]

just until sunday…

…please forward all mail and comments to kiawah island, boardwalk #27, sixth umbrella on the right.  thank you.

a small setback

as my meg says, it is truly tragical: my camera hit the ground, and has been deemed beyond repair.  thankfully, a new one is on its way, but in the meantime, please excuse the purse-cam photos.

if you are interested in salvaging a high-mileage but well-loved old minolta maxxum 5d for parts  - model year 2005 – please get in touch, and i will [...]

sidewalk sale

tomorrow and saturday  (june 18th & 19th) is the much-anticipated sidewalk sale at market central, beginning at 9am.  come ready to shop!  and if you prefer your bargain-hunting in air-conditioned comfort, come inside for more.  since it’s the big sale weekend, go ahead and take 20% off all me & mrs. jones’s furniture.  (vignette e-20, smack-dab in the middle of [...]

silo studios

after launching our children for another great day at camp tatonka, mmes. blackstone, faber & jones snuck away for a most inspiring & hospitable visit at silo studios in thompson’s station, tennessee.  little wonder that shawn south-aswad’s fans show up early to get in line at her amazing home/studio for monthly “studio thursdays”…it’s a happening!  even if you don’t take home a piece [...]

eeny, meeny

a lovely client considering a major kitchen overhaul for her gorgeous 1920’s-era home asked for two different looks using the same paint color.  so, here are two options for her…layered, distressed and glazed, or painted & waxed (with old knobs out of the dish, just to test-drive.)   thoughts?

jamie + andy forever

a lovely mother-of-the-groom honored mrs. jones with a request to add some little details to the decor at the rehearsal dinner.  held at the hughes pavillion in the gardens at the dixon gallery, one of the prettiest spots in town, the setting was the inspiration for the garden-y materials we used: burlap, grapevine, terra-cotta.  the rain moved [...]

dateline: graceland

in an exciting detour from regularly scheduled life, sally walker davies has tapped mrs. jones to snap the photos for her two upcoming memphis/elvis projects (all the details coming soon).  it was a blast (and great privilege) to spend yesterday with the super-charming, professional and accommodating alicia dean, media assistant for elvis presley enterprises at graceland, who v.i.p.’d me through the mansion, grounds, shops, cars and planes, and [...]

feeling mod-podge-y

still not sure exactly where this project is going, but i’m excited to have a fresh bottle of mod-podge paper and these happy books from the flea market to think about.  (it’s much more fun than a pile of tax forms, for sure.)  of course, you’ll be the first to know what develops.

april food day, no fooling

generous-spirited design bloggers meg fairfax fielding and chris cox have teamed up once again this year to direct our attention toward helping those among us who are hungry.  and not just weight-watchers-points-counting-hungry like mrs. jones…really truly hungry.  will you lovely readers consider giving today to your local food bank, feeding america or  feed the children?   thank you.  for even [...]

at the altar of faux

please indulge one final post-script post to our recent santa fe trip: the beautiful chapel of our lady of light (popularly known as the loretto chapel, subject of the movie the staircase and an “unsolved mysteries” episode) is interesting and historic for oh-so many reasons…what was really appealing about it to me, though, were the finishes employed by their craftsmen [...]

meet me at the fayre

no, not the one with the carnival rides and funnel cakes…the spring fayre event today through saturday at the palladio group shops in midtown memphis.  guest speakers, art and gardening demonstrations, spring fashions, estate jewelry and trunk shows are all on offer.  and please drop by and see me & mrs. jones at market central between ten and [...]

la nina tocha

please help educate mrs. jones!  at a little folk art market in santa fe, this piece caught my eye….i loved the broken gilding on the top and edges, and was intrigued by the images on the panels.  despite a language barrier, they were happy to accept mr. jones’s amex card, and so the impulse purchase was made.  [...]

farolitos

something else learned while in santa fe: those little party lanterns we’ve been making forever with paper bags, sand, and votives, (and sometimes stenciling with a theme-appropriate graphic, like the ones below) and referring to as “luminaries”, originated in new mexico and are more correctly called farolitos.

there, luminaria are more often small vigil fires, traditionally built in the courtyard of [...]

spring break!

please check back in next week…santa fe is just as fabulous as advertised!  (don’t worry, i have my baedeker.)

32 sq ft

today is the day! mrs. jones officially sticks her toe into retail with her own little slice of market central:
a spot to find freshened-up vintage furniture and fixtures, painted pots, stenciled pillows, and more.  with this little “vignette” space, there will only be room for a few pieces at a time, but (hopefully) something new on offer every time you [...]

32 sq ft, con’t.

for those of you playing the home game, here is the before, during & after of the little vignette, and all the particulars:

paint colors, from benjamin moore: ivory white, #925 (base coat – wall and floor), brushed aluminum, #1485 (used for stenciling), deep indigo, #1442 (dark checks on floor) and bali, #702 (lighter frames).  from pratt & lambert: boucle, #24.26 (darker frames) and on the [...]

cherry blossom time

while this project did, for sundry reasons, take so long that the trees actually could have grown, there is finally a finished product to show you.  (unfortunately, these particular blossoms did not make the national park service’s bloom watch list.  perhaps memphis is too far from washington d.c. to qualify.)
so many of you have been in touch with encouragment and kindness as progress [...]

almost there

despite recent (very) short work weeks and chilly weather, there are (finally!) cherry blossoms beginning to bloom, and butterflies traveling amongst them:

please check back later in the week for the final product.

5th grade hearts for haiti

mrs. jones took a short break today to help decorate for a party meg’s grade gave celebrating the olympics and benefitting haiti.  minimizing the expenses to maximize the donation, we got global with some beach balls, created torches for the games & awards, and stenciled olympic rings on to butcher paper for the tables.  with a great dj (how many [...]

r2-d2

several lovely readers have written recently to ask mrs. jones about “staying plumb”.  so, let me introduce you to my little friend, the laser level, whom the little joneses have fondly dubbed r2-d2.  for projects such as a wall in silver leaf, lattice and stripes, or for hanging pictures, r2 is the perfect companion.  he vacuums himself very gently to the wall, humming pleasantly, and provides a [...]

progress report

between snow days and school holidays, there were precious few hours this week to clock in and continue work on the cherry blossom project, but here is an update:

first, the trees are mapped out with tape…

then, roots, trunks and branches grow.

still to come: more blossoms and leaves, butterflies and a bird (or two), a little ground [...]

21

just shaking the glitter off my clothes after a great getaway to celebrate the fact that, as mr. jones says, our marriage could now (legally) go to a casino and have a drink.  while in las vegas you’re always subject to gratuitous amounts of gilding and the over-use of over-the-top finishes, but there was beautiful restraint in spots, too…in addition to the food, i especially [...]
