splish splash

May 11, 2011 by Mrs. Jones Admin

anna baskin lattimore found this fab stand and sink for her lovely clients’ powder room.   when the painters came through on their last sweep, they accidentally caulked this little piece of wood into place as a backsplash, when it was only meant to be a placeholder for another material.  at that stage of the construction, moving forward was much simpler than undoing it, and anna asked if i could match it to the stand.  so, it’s just a tiny detail, but here is a little before and after for you to see.

before (with tinted primer):

and after:

after the tinted primer, i applied coats of a custom-mixed paint that was as close as possible to the color of the wood.  some grainy texture with dark brown glaze, two coats of varnish, and it’s off the punch-list.

creepy-crawly or edgy/cool?  please reserve your judgement till you’ve seen the whole thing.

happy mother’s day

May 8, 2011 by Mrs. Jones Admin

sending love out to all the mothers among you lovely readers, and especially to my own mom, who (with all due respect to mrs. stewart) invented clever. a second-grade teacher turned super-volunteer turned public relations maven, she has been a life-long inspiration to me and everyone else lucky enough to know her.  throwing legendary parties, pulling sewing all-nighters to make sure we were fabulously clad, creatively tending to every detail for her lucky p.r. clients…honey makes it all look so easy, and makes everything so much fun.

chapeaux to go

May 7, 2011 by Mrs. Jones Admin

between easter sunday, the royal wedding, and the kentucky derby, the topic of conversation among mrs. jones’s stylish friends lately seems to have been all about hats.  a conversation i overheard at a kate-&-will party last week revealed that memphian kaki valerius smith makes beautiful hats, rivaling any milliner anywhere.  (yes, even you, philip treacy!  take that!)  on some of her pieces, kaki incorporates pieces of vintage jewelry she finds on her travels, and even dyes the ribbons to get the exact hues she envisions for each beautiful, hand-blocked topper.

i have known kaki for years as a neighbor, dedicated volunteer, and fellow lacrosse carpool mom, never realizing that her artistry and ingenuity extended to creating gorgeous confections like these.  (so glad i was eavesdropping!)

here’s a little hint

May 4, 2011 by Mrs. Jones Admin

miss ginger grant wants to give you a little help with the freekibble question of the day today…

michaelangelo, leonardo davinci, rembrandt, picasso, andy warhol, and georgia o’keeffe all owned this breed of dog:

a.  dachshund

b.  sheltie

c.  irish wolfhound

d.  pug

(we love it when it’s a dachsie question and has to do with painters!)  if you’re so inclined, please sign up for freekibble’s emails to feed a shelter pup each day.  on may 5, all kibble raised will go to animals affected by the recent tornadoes and storms in our region.  on behalf of poochies everywhere, ginger thanks you.

kitty gray console

April 30, 2011 by Mrs. Jones Admin

another fun project for anna baskin lattimore’s clients…they were looking for a piece for their entry similar to this one they liked, from shades of light:

 Vintage French Gray Console Table

and then realized that they already had a console that was the right size for the space…it had a metal “baker’s rack” on top…easily removed:

anna specified a slightly deeper, greener shade of gray (benjamin moore’s kitty gray, #1589) rubbed back over ivory white (#925), with a little distressing and aging.  here is the after, and some details (better, accessorized images coming soon!):

kate + wills 4-ever

April 28, 2011 by Mrs. Jones Admin

everyone, everywhere seems to be chiming in on tomorrow’s royal wedding…and mrs. jones may never recover from the crushing blow of not having made the guest list. the only thing keeping her crumpets together is seeing all the pretty, brit-y things on offer all around.  two faves:

this hand-embroidered royal wedding cushion, by jan constantine (who i think may be a sort of british soul-sister to natalie chanin, with the value she places on traditional hand-stitching and natural fibers)

Royal Wedding Cushion

and this union jack dresser, painted by one of my design crushes and kindred spirits, barb blair of knack and design*sponge fame…

now as to the matter of tiara vs. hat…it could go either way, i think…but miss middleton will look gorgeous whichever she chooses.

and this officially concludes our royal wedding coverage.

xxl coffee table

April 27, 2011 by Mrs. Jones Admin

lovely clients of anna baskin lattimore’s were hoping to use their old coffee table – the perfect size and shape for the room and their family – in their new home.   it just needed a fresher, lighter look.  after stripping the varnish and priming it, i added layers of paint (anna’s excellent choices: pratt & lambert’s chalk gray, #11.32, rubbed back over benjamin moore’s bleeker beige, #hc.80) and then tinted glaze and varnish for a little depth and protection.  here is the before, the not-yet-accessorized after, and a few details:

on the bunny trail

April 24, 2011 by Mrs. Jones Admin

hope you’ve all had a wonderful weekend!  along with an incredible service at idlewild, a grand easter lunch with friends, and a super-fab egg hunt & party, we had lovely company come hopping our way…only mr. jayne could get away with tucking a foo dog in with my old paris when my back was turned.  i think it will have to stay right there.

island, girl

April 20, 2011 by stephanie

lovely clients have engaged talented anna baskin lattimore to help them wrap up the details of their beautiful new jeff bramlett-designed home.   they were looking for a soft, furniture-y feel for their kitchen island and mrs. jones was more than happy to oblige.  starting with the base coat of duxbury gray (benjamin moore # hc.163) i added anna-approved, rubbed-back streaks of puritan gray (hc.164).  on top, a glaze tinted with raw umber and just a little dollop each of lamp black and titanium white was rubbed over the whole thing, and used to add water-spots and fly-specks.  a low-lustre varnish seals and protects the finish.  here is the before, the after, and some details:

(the perfectly constructed, gorgeously detailed cabinets were built by bob westmoreland.)

they also requested just a tiny bit of aging glaze in some of the nooks and crannies on the cabinets.  anna was spot-on as usual in choosing a scheme pulled together by the de-lish wallpaper she used in the adjacent butler’s pantry.

the whole enterprise would not have been nearly as much fun without buddy, the sweetest doggie ever, and, by the way, an excellent herder.

unabashedly gorgeous

April 18, 2011 by Mrs. Jones Admin

while mrs. jones’s paint-spattered fashion moment may have to wait for a blog to be published under the title “an unabashed mess”, please take a minute and feast your eyes upon ali of a noble savage here (and more at unabashedly prep.)  never before has emulsion and enamel collided with clothing and looked so perfect.  (and gucci loafers as collateral damage?  bring it on.)

the empire strikes back

April 16, 2011 by Mrs. Jones Admin

every once in a while, lovely clients request a transformation for a piece that might be better left alone, and mrs. jones must employ all diplomatic tactics at her disposal to try to alter their course.   in this case, however, my client was not to be swayed, and so (while i realize this may unleash an onslaught of criticism from fans of mahogany empire-style furniture) here is the before and insisted-upon after…a look approaching bleached pine, similar to this piece from wisteria that caught her eye…that really does suit her beautiful home much better.

empire-lovers, may i offer this additional consolation: the dresser is being loved and used, and will not just crumble to splinters in the attic.  please do not be cross with me.

feeling oh-so-chic…

April 11, 2011 by Mrs. Jones Admin

…chinoiserie chic, that is…beth connolly has featured a particular little cocktail table on one of her wonderful blogs. (last week, she shone her spotlight on the silver-gilded chairs, too.) thank you, beth, for the generous chinoiserie love! mrs. jones, freshly inspired, will be scouring the flea market this coming weekend for more fret-worked and pagoda-fied goodies.

lovely memphis designer anna lattimore has the table front & center in her beautifully-edited guest vignette (photos above) at market central this month, too, which i am also so grateful for.

the table and the remaining chair are available at market central and etsy.  {edit 4/18: the last chair has sold.}

flown

April 8, 2011 by Mrs. Jones Admin

a cute little table followed me home from the nashville flea market last fall,

and so a few pages from a damaged copy of the 1954 audubon field guide that featured the tennessee warbler seemed the right fit for a decoupaged treatment.  here is the before and after:

after deciding that i couldn’t improve on the old layers of green and white paint on the legs and apron, they got a good sanding and sealing with varnish. and this “portlandia” video made me change my mind about stenciling a bird on the table…so i settled for a trail of silver-leaf feathers instead.

it is available on etsy and at market central.
