we’re on spring break out west this week (more details coming) but here are a couple of process shots of one of a pair of armoires i’ll be finishing as soon as i get home…beautifully custom built for my lovely client with the guidance of jill sartelle street, they will house all of her family’s entertainment gadgetry. the finish is layers of buff-colored and soft-white paints with a layer of clear wax and then another coat of wax tinted just a little. gilt wax highlights the details. full “afters” coming soon, along with beautiful hardware and gilded metal stands.

Mrs. Jones- love your blog! How do I paint over stained/wax finish on armour? about 10 years old.
Thanks!

seana, the best way to go over an old finish totally depends on the existing finish and the look you want. feel free to email me with photos of the piece and we can talk through some options…stephanie@mrsjonespaintedfinishes.com.

hello! i have three questions pretty please. the first, what type of clear wax did you use? the secoind, you mentioned use wax tinted a little but I am not sure what that means. The last question, can I use minway polyurethane on chalk paint? Thank you ahead of time for your answers.

hoang, i am happy to help…the waxes i prefer are the annie sloan soft waxes…they were created to use with annie’s wonderful chalk paint®. so, clear soft wax followed by some of annie’s dark wax mixed with clear to lighten it up…i mix it about 1/3 dark to 2/3 clear to get a butter-scotch-y color.
minwax poly is not recommended over chalk paint® – it’s too plastic-y and shiny, and when the chalk paint absorbs it, whatever is below the chalk paint can be re-activated, causing bubbling and stains to bloom through and all kinds of other crazy things that will spoil your project…stick with the wax, you’ll be so much happier!
