mrs. jones is thrilled to have made the acquaintance this week of an exceptionally talented, creative, inspiring young lady, lauren anderson stone. watch your radar screen for her presence…she is creating some fabulous things, and is already making the world a much more beautiful place. if you have found your way here through the exceedingly generous recent mention in her delightful blog, welcome.
cirque de taylor
what an honor to be included in the celebration as precious miss mcadams turned two! naturally, selena and patrick had seen to every perfect detail. it was a sweet & charming circus-themed afternoon with family and friends, and no scary clowns. happy birthday, taylor.
more (and more fabulous!) photos, and a delicious slice of abundantly talented photographer & author melissa anderson sweazey’s work are at thoroughly modern medusa.
coming up…
…two of the most fun days of the year, this tuesday and wednesday…”le cadeau”. on offer: gifts, antiques & accessories (katherine kaelin & karen klawinski), antique & estate jewelry (nikki mcvean & joanne hathcock), and art by adair parthenais & paige thompson. if you are in the memphis area and have not recieved your invitation in the mail, please email me for the details. here is just a taste:
so please come by and see us. mrs. jones will be in the pool house with new samples to show, and painted furniture, the vintage-y pots, and hand-dyed & painted t-shirts for you to take home. (don’t forget: sip & shop from five until eight tuesday…all your friends will be there!)
varnishing day
unlike the traditional “varnishing day” (below), or those at the salon de paris that deborah davis describes in her excellent, fascinating book, strapless, varnishing days at our little studio are all about cleaning and making sure things are washed, swept, vacuumed, swiffer’d and totally dust-free. (and when using the gorgeous but especially unforgiving high-gloss varnishes and lacquers, we even change out the air filters…it’s that important.) any tiny particles or fibers in the air will find their way into the varnish and mar the finish.
my little dachshund, miss ginger grant, believes that varnishing days are all about her…she loves it when the drop cloths come out of the dryer and land on the floor in a nice warm heap. it’s easy to know where to find her.
dove season
another trip to columbia, another wonderful evening with family and friends…the ever-gracious delk & mary susan kennedy hosted a hunt supper at their beautiful glendale farm to usher in the beginning of hunting season in tennessee.
when it was time to come home, it was awfully hard for the little joneses to leave regina the beagle.
where are my manners?
a belated “thank-you” to the very kind marie for the mention on her wonderfully vintage-y blog, romance & relics. she’s the go-to girl for a flea-market fix. if you have found your way here via r & r, welcome! and please make yourself at home.
dad, men, “mad men”
in anticipation of tomorrow night’s long-awaited season premiere of mr. jones’s and my only truly “must” tv, we are having our own tiny “mad men” moment. (and it is not cocktail-related. at least not yet.) below, my father’s “corporate photographic portrait” by fabian bachrach, circa 1962…selena mcadams suggested it be displayed (brilliantly, cheekily) alongside my pair of amy rowan’s collaborative prints. and though my nattily attired dad worked in manhattan for IBM during the “mad men” era, unlike don draper and the scoundrels at sterling cooper, he was exceptionally well behaved, and always on the train back to greenwich in time for dinner.
recent works on display
while there are many artists i admire, the works i enjoy most are, of course, the ones the little joneses have created. recently, chris garner had one of his famous garage sales at his studio, where gorgeous frames that are for one reason or another deemed unsuitable by the original client are made available at a bargain price to mere mortals like mrs. jones. (many thanks to selena mcadams, who, as always, advised on my curating efforts.)
the best week of the year…
…is finally here.
just a little more wicked.
we just can’t help it…my meg and i love everything wicked. so when the top-notch touring production arrived at the orpheum in memphis, we rolled out the green carpet to celebrate with friends pre-theatre.
marcie dodd was perfect as elphaba, the green girl who tries to make good.
happy birthday, america
five joneses, eight hotdogs, three sno-cones, one winning redbirds baseball team, and too many oooh’s and aaah’s to count.
i think that’s a pretty-close-to-perfect fourth of july.
travelogue: columbia, tennessee
oh, columbia! visit to celebrate mule day, to make a pilgrimage to the beautiful, historic old homes and churches (including the james k. polk home, which has a great little bookshop) and to see the county courthouse and other “hannah montana” movie filming locations. or, follow mrs. jones’s fave afternoon itinerary and enjoy lunch at lovely liz lovell’s square market, an iced mocha at killion’s, and a stroll over to loblolly to see artist & owner ellen calvin’s terrific mix of vintage and antique finds, art by some talented locals, and ellen’s own fab & whimsical still life paintings.
this one, called “three’s a crowd”, had to come back to memphis with me:
the secret supper
this weekend, three generations of family friends gathered for a special dinner party on the grounds of fairfield, an antebellum home near mr. jones’s hometown, columbia, tennessee. hosted by dear friends the kennedys and vests, and my amazing sister- & brother-in-law, we were asked to save the date, with the location divulged via e-mail just prior to the event. guests without 4-wheel drive were conveyed across the creek and up the lane by handsome young men in jeeps. it was truly an inspiring, magical, moonlight-and-magnolias evening…the kind we chicago girls just dreamed about.
here is fairfield, before & after:
mine that bird
better than being in a box at churchill downs was a kentucky derby day dinner party given by our super-lovely friends colleen and larry capstick at her family’s beautiful antebellum farm, summer trees. every detail was perfect, from the mint juleps right through to the croissant & white chocolate bread pudding, and mrs. jones’s friends all looked so stunning in their chapeaux! and while none of us bet on the right horse, it was thrilling to watch a long shot make good.
(confession: naturally, my own wagers were determined based on the horse’s silks…i love seeing the post parade, and all those gorgeous colors.
atomic rain: mrs. jones had her money on your vibrant pink and orange combination. you looked magnificent out there.)
exchange (club) rates
with dear friends courtney, margaret and rinnie committed to such an outstanding organization, i was happy to say “yes!”…and so this little table is going to be auctioned at the exchange club family center’s annual hands of hope benefit on march 28.
a flea market find, it got a fresh coat of paint (benjamin moore’s healing aloe, #1562), a layer of glaze (mixed with bali, #702), a stenciled damask pattern (in cameo white, #915) on top, silver leaf on the knob, and a little distressing and aging. inside the drawer (pratt & lambert’s black orchid, #31.17) is a silver-gilded reminder for the successful bidder of the children served by their generosity.
